About Me

Hello, my name is Zoya Saeed and I am a recent Life Science graduate from Queen’s University. I am beginning my journey in Seneca’s cosmetic graduate certificate program, and decided to create this site as I found a lack of resources to better understand the world of cosmetic science, especially at a beginner’s level. The site explains skincare ingredients, product formulas, and cosmetic science in a clear, approachable way for people without a chemistry background, as well as more detailed scientific explanations for those with a chemistry background.Whatever your chemistry background I hope this website has something for you!
Understand the science behind skincare
Welcome to Zoya Formulates! a space where I translate cosmetic chemistry into clear, practical skincare guidance, as well as break down mechanisms of actions into analogies so you can shop and use your products more confidently.

Cosmetic Science, Simplified
Understanding skincare goes beyond ingredients. From how emulsions are formed to why pH matters and how your skin barrier works — this is your starting point for smarter skincare decisions.
🧪
Emulsification
How oil and water combine to form creams and lotions. The magic behind every moisturiser.
⚖️
pH & Skin Barrier
Your skin thrives at a slightly acidic pH. Understanding this helps you layer products without disrupting your barrier.
🔬
How Actives Work
Actives like retinol or niacinamide work through specific biological pathways. Learn the mechanism, not just the hype.
💧
Formulation Types
Serums, oils, creams, gels — each has a different delivery system. Knowing the difference changes how you build your routine.
🌿
Skin Penetration
Not every ingredient reaches where it needs to go. Molecular size and formulation affect how deep an ingredient actually works.
🧬
The Skin Microbiome
Your skin hosts billions of microorganisms that protect it. Learn how certain ingredients can help or disrupt this ecosystem.
